  • Awarded THE EUROPEAN THEATER MEDAL (with five battle stars)

  • Awarded THE PRESIDENTIAL CITATION (for greatest accuracy in completed missions)

  • Awarded THE GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL

  • Awarded THE WORLD WAR II VICTORY MEDAL

  • Graduated at the top of his Cadet Training Class

  • Saved the lives of his crew by having them bail out before he crash-landed his badly burned and shot-up plane alone
